Touchdown, return from Japan

It's 2.52am, unpacked my goods, said my 'hi's and byes, and got into some comfortable clothes. Looking at my goods, I feel so overjoyed with emotions, still being unable to accept the fact that my trip to Japan was oh-so-short. Will put pics later when I'm completely done unpacking and setting up my insanely overloaded Figma collection.

It's Go Time.

Be back on 31st Dec. Have fun guys, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Wrap-up of the Year

I'll be leaving for Japan in a couple of more hours, translating to me being almost unable to update anymore until I return to Singapore. So, as an early Christmas and New Year present, I've decided to summarise all the happenings in the otaku circle. For Singapore, on most part that is. As for the anime categories, I'll only be talking about one that I've watched, so if I've missed out your favourite anime, do leave a comment. (Yea, the 'best of the year' is somewhat misleading, but it's hard to catch up on all genres of anime alone >_>)

Biggest event of the year:
Anime Festival Asia '08
This was THE milestone of the year for Singapore and its otaku/anime/Japan-lovers' community. Never before had an event of such scale and attention been hosted in Singapore, a lonely little dot. And of course, the center of attention was May'n's live performance, which electrified all her fans and casual passersby alike, singing her heart out. Not to mention was the great bargains of figurines by many participating shops, such as KKnM and Latendo. There definitely was room for improvement, but I'm sure with the feedback they've been getting, next year would be even more exciting.

Funniest Anime of the year:
Toradora!

No, I really wasn't biased. But frankly speaking, no other anime had made me sway back from comedic gold moments to serious emotional cliffhanger moments so easily. The balance was perfect, and with a great cast of characters that vary so different from each other like night and day, as well as the funny attempts to help each other get attention of their love targets, anyone is bound to lighten up after watching an episode or two of Toradora!. Recommended for those who want to get away from serious, plot-heavy animes.

Just a side note, if I watched Hyakko, it might have been here. But then again, I haven't. So, sorry folks who liked Hyakko :P

Most Boring Anime of the Year:
Neo Angelique ~Abyss~

I never heard of this anime until founding out that it's the anime that will feature 'Aiaikasa', sung by Tegomass. Since it's Tegomass, I was like, hey why not?
Only to realise that that's the worst decision I've probably made this year on selecting animes to watch. The plot really wasn't there from episode 1 onwards, characters looked like a hybrid between shoujo and Code Geass, not to mention that I've never heard of the seiyuus casting in it, except Aya Endou, Hiroki Takahashi and Daisuke Ono. The story moved too slow, and too boringly. It was excruciatingly painful to watch the entire first episode, so off it went to the bin.

Most Disappointing Anime of the Year:
Jigoku Shoujo Mitsuganae

Yes, Jigoku Shoujo. I know how amazingly good this was the last 2 seasons, but this season was simply messed up. A suddenly-appeared shota, Enma Ai's mysterious reappearance, highly predictable outcomes of each episode, and even more ridiculous punishments and cause. Then of course, they decided to NOT use SNOW for their OP theme songs (aah.. Sakasama no Chou) and use Kitade Nana's 'Tsukihana'. All the hype that have been building up, just burst after like, 5 episodes. But now that they are getting better somewhat (episode 9 was horrible though), I believe they'll slowly redeem themselves.

Most Disappointing OVA of the Year:
School Rumble Sangakki

It seems that the producers didn't really pay much attention to this. Graphic-wise, it was still the same old School Rumble feel, but at times, the faces seemed really out of proportion. Even the same comedic moments for which School Rumble was famous for wasn't really there. Maybe it's because it's only two episodes long, hence the need to squeeze all the important facts into them (Tenma, Karasuma, Harima, Yakumo, Eri's progress), leaving out no time for the fun and laughter. Honestly speaking though, expected more out of this.

Most Unexpectedly Good Anime of the Year:
H2O: Footprints in the Sand

Featuring an unknown cast lineup (except Ami Koshimizu and Harumi Sakurai, who got more attention after Akasaka), using a story from an eroge I didn't hear of, I was quite doubtful at first. Characters didn't look outstanding, graphics looked just above average, and the studio producing it was not in my radar. But as I watched, the plot got deeper, so did the characters. They also did a fine job with choosing catchy theme songs, and I really enjoyed this series more and more as it progressed, leading to an ultimately good ending (as with most eroge adaptions of course). A tearjerking anime if you watch the whole series at one go.

Most Incomprehensible Anime of the Year:
Chaos;Head

I really don't know what to say here except 'wtf'. Seriously, this anime is so confusing that it gives me headaches after each episode. Amazing.

Best Visuals:
Toaru Majutsu no Index

J.C Staff, I love you for your Blu-ray Shana-istic quality.

P.S: WHEN IS SNS III COMING OUT??

Best Harem Anime:
toLOVEru

Some say it's too harem, but I beg to differ. Probably because I didn't watch the manga, or I found toLOVEru's level of harem-ity acceptable. But the comedy was hilarious, so were all the sexual inferences, as well as the amount of semi-nudity. One thing I really hated was Rito being all gaagaa over Haruna. Haruna should just burn in hell D: (THAT'S WHY I REALLY REALLY REALLY HATED THE LAST EPISODE ASDHASOASDASD)

Most Overly Harem Anime:
Kanokon

Too much harem is bad for your health. It forces you to neglect your plots, even the main purpose why you exist. Kanokon, why did you even get produced into an anime if it were to turn out like that? Fox-lolis don't really always work out. Neither does mediocore graphics.

'Coolest' Anime of the Year:
Kuroshitsuji

When you bring in an awesome seiyuu, combined with a Butler who can kick ass before you know it, getting a taste of the high class living, along with an AWESOME CROSSDRESSING LOLI-LOOKING CIEL, you get the coolest anime of the year. Nuff said. Go watch it now!

The Anime that made me wish lasted longer:
REC

This was a short 12-minute-per-episode anime, directed by SHAFT. I think I blogged about this, so I won't really go into details about this. I only wished that it could have lasted longer, though deep down in my heart, I know that the length of the episodes and the numbers of episodes were somewhat refreshing and just right in quantity.

Best Shounen Anime of the Year:
Soul Eater

Adrenaline-filled action, along with High Definition graphics, great voice actors, an amazing character lineup, each with unique personalities, as well as a shounen-targetted heavy plot, you get an anime outclassing Naruto and Bleach combined. That's right, Naruto and Bleach is out, now's Soul Eater time.

Best OP song of the Year:
Donten - DOES (Gintama)

I don't know about all the hard termologies, so I'll just make it straightforward. The guitar and drums were awesome. Can't find any other songs that come close to this.

Best ED song of the Year:
Vanilla Salt - Horie Yui (Toradora!)

Horie Yui came back with an amazingly catchy song, with cute lyrics, and a transformed voice. Last time I heard her was through her song 'Scramble', used in School Rumble. This time, her voice was completely transformed (yes, digital age, but still, it's nice).

Best OP sequence of the Year:
Soul Eater First OP (Resonance - T.M Revolution)

I would have chosen the OP for Papermoon by tommy heavenly6, if not for the Excalibur.
This OP, on HD of course, shows a good blend of action and introduction of the characters. Watch the OP here.

Best ED sequence of the Year:
Kuroshitsuji First ED (I'm Alive! - BECCA)

For a serious looking Anime, they really did a good job in making such a cute ED sequence. Watch it here.

Best Seiyuu of the Year:
Rie Kugimiya
Roles:
Miharu Rokujo - Nabari no Ou
Mio - Zettai Karen Children
Taiga Aisaka - Toradora!
Yuuhi Katagiri - Akane Iro ni Somaru Saka
Louise - Zero no Tsukaima ~Princess no Rondo~
Izuna Endo - Kurogane no Linebarrels
Shana - Shakugan no Shana II
Kagura - Gintama

Can you say 'no' to such an awesome Tsundere-voicing Seiyuu?

Most Epic (aka The Best) Anime of the Year:
Code Geass R2

For all the reasons the Internet knows.

I need to go off, saying goodbye to my parents before I leave for Japan. Might edit this when I return later. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!

Imba Ninja Bush Shoe Evasion Dodge

Speaks for itself.

Toradora - 10

Episode 10 : Fireworks

Brief intro to the episode:
Ryuuji and Taiga are exhausted from their horrifying experience the previous night, but that does not deter them from conjuring up a plan to scare Minori. They are overheard by Yuusaku, who offers to assist them, along with Ami...

Thoughts on the episode:
I think that Toradora is really revving up its gear to bring this series into a heartfelt story that shows mature complicated relationship experiences, such as Ami's loniless and willingness to looking forward to Ryuuji for companionship and reliability, Taiga's possible jealousy and sadness of slowly losing Ryuuji, Ryuuji and Minori's progress... (wait they are all related to Ryuuji. Lucky fella.) I find it really praiseworthy of how J.C Staff manages to blend the perfect mix between humor and romance, despite the fact that they are working on Toaru Majutsu no Index at the same time (something which I have to catch up.. soon =.="). A must see episode for those who are the more people-person.

Just a side note, these parts look like from Quarantine/Cloverfield (the night vision mode).

Next Episode Preview - Oohashi High School Cultural Festival (Part 1)

Mentioned something about cosplay and stuff, and seeing how Taiga got angry, I think that she got jealous over Ryuuji wanted to participate so much in the festival with Minori or something without considering Taiga or her feelings. Go go next week!

Christmas is here... soon.

It's nearing Christmas, a festival of happiness and joy. To most of us anyway.

My Christmas experiences were never really that special. Growing up in a Buddhism-believing family, my parents never celebrated it, so of course, presents and pocket money are non-existent. But this year is super duper uber ultra exceptional. I mean, how awesome is it to go to the Land of the Rising Sun, the Kingdom of Otakus, the loli raep heaven right on Christmas? I'm sure my parents didn't bother, it's just that the ticket dates were just nicely on those dates. But whatever.

My main idea was to go to Comiket, Akihabara, Maid Cafes and stalk Japanese schoolgirls but ended up going on tour, due to parents' protectiveness. But it turns out that it won't be so bad after all, going to Mt Fuji, an inn, an Onsen (Hot Spring), Universal Studios and Boringland Disneyland. What I really worry is whether or not we will have enough time for both Comiket and Akibahara raid. Want to collect the entire Figma collection (excluding the baseball mascots), getting the Japan-only Christmas gear for Figma, as well as pick up a couple of doujins and merchandise. Probably eat some good food too. (Thinks of dango... Nagisa~)

With recent rise in crime in Japan, I fear for my life, but I feel it's okay to lay down my life for the greater good, contributing towards awareness of Otakus. Banzai!!!!!!!!!!

Please don't take the above paragraph seriously. Merry Early Christmas.

Current Life Status

Finally caught up on Heroes, so I now have time to finish up on my delayed animes. And what better anime to start off than Toradora?

I can't BELIEVE how much fun watching Toradora was, watching them made me all giggling with laughter yet at moments, feel touched and all wishy-washy. Episode 9 proved to be the best episode so far, with actual developments in the Kitamura x Taiga x Ryuuji x Minorin x Ami pentagonal relationship. Whether you like the tsundere Taiga, or the uber eccentric Minorin, or the deep Ami, it's up to you. Might catch up on Akane Iro ni Somaru Saka next, or Clannad ~After Story~. Can't really make up my mind. Gah, really troublesome to decide among favourites >.<

Overdue Update

Yes yes, I know I've been a lazy bum and didn't touch on my blog for a week (I did update on the Starcraft Proleague news though), so go ahead, whack me D:

While browsing through, I saw this by Tadashi, a fansubber, and his thoughts are well, almost exact to mine.

Quoted from his website here.

"This is going to be my second rant post since I started subbing Soul Eater. Bear with me.

So Funimation has been hard at work keeping copyrighted material off the ‘net… Some people responded with angry e-mails, I’ve noticed. I doubt that will have any effect, but if you have a voice, you should make it heard. Some people have responded with ambivalence, or even positively, telling all us heathenous TV pirates to go to hell. Ah well.

The anime industry is pretty unique in that people like to view episodes as soon as possible after their Japanese air date. Downloading fansubs has been, while illegal, a great way to keep the community together.

People have preferences with their translations. There is, I’m sure, a huge amount of Soul Eater fans that refuse to watch my subtitles because I try to make it a full-fledged localization rather than keeping titles and names and honorifics in Japanese (for the record, I don’t see the point. You can hear them say it in their speech, so if you know what it means, it’s redundant). I don’t fret over this - that’s been my style, and there are other fansub groups who can tickle the fancy of people who don’t like my subs. DVD translations are no different. Someone might prefer a more direct (or indirect) localization than is offered. That’s where softsubs come in. Well, where they *used* to.

From what I know of the localization business, here’s what happens - Big Company creates Big Anime and airs it on TV. Big Anime gets popular overseas through fansubs, and Big Business from America decides to buy the rights to localization. Big Company charges Big Business a shitload of royalty fees just for one episode. When you buy those DVDs, you’re helping pay back those huge licensing fees. Big Business doesn’t want to go broke, so they force everyone to buy their English releases by shutting down fansubs a certain portion of the way through the series, and I swear this is a marketing tactic to build suspense for the end, but I can’t prove it. And they do this even when it causes anger among the community (and several people swear to never buy Big Business DVDs). Big Company over in Japan never sees these profits of US DVDs. Big Company gets all their money from the royalty localization fees. Does Big Company give a shit about the localization after they receive their check? No. It’s up to American Big Business to market, sell, translate, and profit from these DVDs…

But it’s often sub-par, and they often send out cease and desist letters to boost their DVD sales, and they waste money on English voice actor commentaries when they could be using that money to, I don’t know, BUY MORE LICENSES or something else that can *help* American anime culture rather than *hurt* it, e.g. wasting money on legal threats.

Anyway, that’s why I don’t buy R1 DVDs. I buy R2 DVDs and raw manga, I pay a shitload for shipping, yes, but I feel that my money is better spent, because I know at least a *portion* of my money goes towards the original creators.

What are you paying for, when you buy, say, a $30 Gurren Lagann DVD from Suncoast? You’re paying overhead for the store, you’re paying minimum wage for the poor clerk who works two jobs, you’re paying for the English dub you probably don’t care for, you’re paying for the printing cost of the disc and box, you’re paying back the high licensing fees, and the salaries of the wonderful people at Big Business that brought the DVD to you. Your dollar is basically helping with licensing fees, which in a horribly indirect fashion, could possibly maybe work its way back into the actual *anime industry*.

There have been a couple, albeit slow steps in the right direction, however. Sony is releasing Bounen no Xam’d on PSN fairly rapidly, and even Crunchyroll is doing something right by allowing people to view anime rapidly on the net while still acquiring ad revenue - similar to watching NBC shows on Hulu or watching Southpark on their official website. All good steps.

Several people have offered to give me donations to keep me going, and I’m greatly appreciative of that, but I couldn’t accept any money. Distributing anime for free over the internet is illegal, and I don’t want to take money for illegal activities (though I still don’t quite understand how a text translation of an unlicensed work is breaking the law). What I do suggest you do, though, is take that money and purchase the official R2 DVDs or even Ohkubo Atsushi’s original manga. Nobody can say you’re stealing fansubs if you own the DVDs, right?

At any rate, as far as I go, [Anonymous] has a good handle on Soul Eater, and here’s to hoping he’ll be able to finish the series in a completely anonymous fashion. I’m looking at other shows to sub, and I discovered RideBack, based on a manga by Kasahara Tetsurou, animated by MADHOUSE and premiering in January. I think it looks very interesting, and I’ve already purchased several of the raw manga volumes. I also wanted to do the Mazinger Z remake, but it looks like it was canceled or something.

If you read all that, congratulations, and thank you for hearing my thoughts. I’ll be around :)"

Heard that?

Figmas - Japan... Wrestlers?

The 'Sakura Hime'

The 'Juohmaru'

Two new figmas, based off an old Japanese wrestling-themed manga were announced, with release date set to be Feb 2009. Have no idea what the manga and anime is about... but the figmas look pretty good. Especially the girl, "Sakura Hime" (Cherry Blossom Princess). Yum, delicious.

Check them out at here:
Eng : Juohmaru , Sakura Hime
Jap : Juohmaru , Sakura Hime

Purchases - iPod Shuffle 2GB and...

Got an iPod shuffle 2GB to get ready for long listening times ahead, for my japan trip and school travels. Small, light, and pretty cheap (if compared to other heavier mp3s). But I had to pay out of my own pocket T_T

Went to Chinatown with Gabe after paying for the Japan trip tickets. And well well, guess what I saw!

YES! HARUHI FIGMA AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *madness*
Got it at $37.50 after the uncle sold Haruhi and Mikuru figma at $75 (Gabe got the Mikuru). Can't play with her yet cause Dad's at home. But I'll have lots of time with her alone after he's gone >w<

Kannagi Faces Troubled Times Ahead

*Why!?*

It appears that the Kannagi manga is being put on hiatus after angry otakus raged and caused the mangaka to an hero take a long good vacation. Hope this doesn't affect the anime production... because despite not watching it for a long time due to Heroes, it's still one series I really want to watch after I'm done catching up on Heroes.

Proleague - New Zerg Battle Technique

Zerg vs Terran was always seen as a very predictable game, without counting individual player's micro control factor. However, this technique that I've long thought about has finally been used, using queen's Ensnare to gain battle advantage and totally negate marine's stim pack. And who was this genius who used this? No other than...

Hyvaa, zerg player from eSTRO. Against who? None other than Flash from KTF. The only setback about this build is that there is insufficient gas, but if Hyvaa played better and gotten 4gas earlier, he would have had crushed Flash hands down. Like how terrans started to use mechanic once again after Fantasy's play against GGPlay, I believe zerg players in the near future would be more creative and dynamic, not the standard zergling/lurker vs marine/medic/tank/vessel. We might see more queen usage, parasite on medic/tank/vessel, broodlings on medics/high templars/tanks, burrow usage to swallow marine/medic early on (like how Jaedong used in one of the MSL matches), etc.
